I started as a Showhauler Dealer just over 3 years ago and it continues to be a great experience. Over the years I have bought and sold almost any RV imaginable and enjoy getting new and used unit to sell. Like any dealer, I am motivated by profit but pride goes into each unit and moving into New Showhauler has been a great fit. Showhauler is one of the last true custom RV Manufactures, a great deal of thought is put into each and every unit it has produced since its inception back in 2001.
Many people have asked why build a unit that is so much different from Showhauler's standard 40-45ft large motorhomes . Because Showhauler is a custom builder, I knew I could build a unit with the outdoor enthusiast in mind and still have a unit that would appeal to RVers and those seeking creature comforts. I have owned some units defined as Expedtion Vehicles, but I have yet to own one that really satisfied all of my wishes. Now I don't want to confuse any one and lead people to believe that this is a unit that can be taken anywhere. The conversion is rigid and has limited flexing, but I did not build this for those seeking rugged mountain roads. I envisioned more well maintained Forest Service Roads and of course winter use to drag snowmobiles or to have as a base camp at the bottom the ski hill. Many of the these unit that are build have limited fresh and waste water storage and are limited by batteries and solar panels. This unit has a 100 gallon freshwater tank and dual 72 gallon waste water tanks. It also boasts a 8,000watt Onan Quiet Diesel Generator, 2-8D AGM Batteries, and 3-140 watt solar panels. In the past, I have seen limited Air Conditioner use and a time when I couldn't use the microwave due to low battery voltage, having a generator on board is very helpful. Having a 72 gallon black water tank is very handy and allows for weeks worth of use, many of the other similar designed units have cartridge toilets that have just a few gallons of storage. Lugging my own poo around in a container is not my idea of a good time.
At the heart of this rugged Showhauler is a crew cab Freightliner M2. Powering the Freightliner is the Cummins ISL 8.9l Turbo Diesel rated at 350hp / 1150ft-lbs torque. Mated to the Cummins is a 3200 series Allison Automatic Transmission. It is equipped a high and low 4x4 system. This is great combination of motor/transmission/truck that offers nationwide service and support. Freightliner , Cummins, and Allison each have a 2 year/unlimited mile warranty and each has their own towing warranty. It will come with a 5 year/100,000 mile Federal Emission Warranty. It is equipped a locking rear differential, massive 425-65-22.5 Firestone Tires, and 4.56 gear ratio. Even a spare tire with easy to use tire carrier. It cruises at 65mph at 1700rpms . I was able to reach 70-75mph but feel this rig is best suited at 65-70mph due to the tire speed rating. I averaged 7.63 mpg traveling from Indiana to Texas.
Showhauler is a fully welded steel construction unit, no fiberglass walls and no screws hold the base conversion together. Safety and strength are a top priority. The exterior aluminum panels are adhered using a 3M adhesive tape that has proven itself over the past decade. Foam board is used between each metal upright and then a sheet of insulation is applied to the interior wall. All water lines are run above the floor and the water tank is located above floor as well. The waste water tanks are heated. All of the cabinets are solid wood and this particular unit is finished in a Caramel Stained Maple. The drawers are all dovetail design and each drawer has soft close drawer glides.
Heating this unit is a Oasis Diesel Fired Hydronic Heating System. It is the Zephyr Model which is rated at 33,000 BTU. Heated coolant circulates through heat registers located under cabinets and the couch. While under way, the truck's engine will circulate heated coolant back the Zephyr so you do not have operate the burner. This function can be reversed allowing you to preheat your motor should the outside temp drop extremely low. The Zephyr has a separate heat exchanger that is designed to heat your water for showers and washing. For the summer months, it is equipped 5,000btu electric element that will serve to heat your domestic water. Each rooftop AC is equipped with a heat strip that can be used when the temps aren't too low.
When it came to a floorplan, I wanted something small but something that allowed for sleeping a whole family or a group of guys out for the weekend. You can sleep up to 5 adults, 2 in the overhead bunk, 1 in the fold down bunk over the couch, and 2 in the fold out couch. The dinette does not lay down into a bed, however it could be modified with a wood table and utilized as a bed if needed. We kept the ceiling height standard but opted for a elevated bunk, hence the elevated roof line. There is a ton of storage in this coach, in fact the area rearwards of the entry door is all storage. The freshwater tank is in the lower portion of this closet/pantry area. There is a 2 burner cooktop, microwave/convection oven, and a serviceable Vitfrigo 8.1 cu/ft fridge that use NO propane and has 134A refrigerant
